Sugar Cane on Maui

Sugar cane is one of Maui's main agricultural crops. You can't miss the sugar cane crops on either side of the highway leading from Kahului out to Kihei. As former dairy farmers, Sig and I are always intrigued with the farm work going on in the fields, pointing out the heavy equipment to the kids (the kids usually just ignore us).

Maui's sugar cane grows for either one or two years (depending on how it is harvested). If you are interested in learning more about the cane and Maui's history, check out the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum across the road from the sugar cane factory (corner of Puunene and Hansen just outside Kahului - you can't miss the smoke stacks). You can also check the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company's website.

Maui's sugar cane is generally harvested by controlled burn. For more information and burn schedules, check Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company's website.
