Once a year bartenders come together at the Royal Kona Resort on Hawaii's Big Island (the Island of Hawaii) to compete for the 'Best Mai Tai In The World' title. This sounds like a great event to attend, doesn't it?
If you like Mai Tais, but don't feel like planning your trip around the annual competition, you'll be pleased to know that this year's winner is from Maui! The Maui Time weekly reported that this year's winner is Wendy Augustine, bar tender at Hali'imaile General Store Restaurant. And the prize was nothing to sniff at - $10,000!
Do you like mai tais? Who makes your favorite mai tai? I have to admit mai tais aren't my favorite drink - but according to the Maui Time article, I may just not be drinking the right ones... Love this quote from Dave Newman, the president of the Hawaii Chapter of the US Bartenders Guild (as reported by the Maui Times): 'Unfortunately, most of the hotels in Hawaii just flood the market with these 'Mai Tai's' - they really shouldn't be called that - that have pineapple, OJ and grenadine in them...' Hm... I think it's time to head up to Hali'imaile for one of Wendy's 'real' mai tais!
Hali'imaile serves lunch Monday-Friday 11-2:30 and dinner nightly 5:30-9pm. Reservations recommended.
