What is Hilo Hatties?

Have you been to Hilo Hatties? What is Hilo Hatties? Hilo Hattie is the name of a popular chain of "vacation shopping" stores across the Hawaiian islands. They have a decent selection of aloha wear, jewelery, coffees, chocolates, CDs, Christmas decorations etc. Ten years ago we did a Hawaiian Islands cruise - at every port you could hop on a bus to take you to the local Hilo Hatties store. I think my sister-in-law went on four of those excursions! haha. I don't know if they still offer them, though I have seen tour buses pulling into Hilo Hatties, so I guess that answers that question.

Do you wear an Aloha dress when you play your ukulele? Love this picture!
The stores are named after Hilo Hattie, aka Clarissa "Clara" Haili (a school teacher) born in 1901. Her singing and hula dancing is what made her famous. In the 1940s she legally changed her name to Hilo Hattie.

Where can you find Hilo Hatties on Maui? There's one in Kihei in the Safeway shopping plaza. There's also one in Lahaina near Front Street.
