Do you use your nose when buying fresh fruit? My rule of thumb always is, if you can't smell the fruit, don't buy it. It may look great, but the fruit's aroma is a huge part of the enjoyment.
We're lucky, on Maui strawberries are harvested year-round. You can find local strawberries at farmer's markets, but also most grocery stores. These ones I picked up at Costco yesterday. Not only are you supporting local farmers, but you also have the satisfaction that your fruit was picked ripe or ripe-er than the fruit flown over from California.
