Is there a ferry to get to the other Hawaiian Islands?

I am often asked if there is a ferry service between the islands. Well, it depends where you want to go. There is ferry service between Maui and the islands of Lanai and Molokai which are both part of Maui County.

However, if you wanted to go to say the Big Island or Oahu, sorry, you'll have to catch a plane. In 2007/08 there was a brief stint with the Superferry which was highly controversial here in Hawaii. Here is a short blurb on some of Hawaii's interisland ferry-history.

Lanai Ferry
There are five round-trip departure times out of Lahaina Harbor to Lanai. This is a walk-on ferry only, you cannot take a car (you can rent a car on Lanai, though there isn't much competition). Here is the website for more information and to purchase tickets.

Molokai Ferry
This ferry leaves twice daily out of Lahaina Harbor to Molokai. Again, no cars on board, but you can rent once you get there. Here is the website for the Molokai Ferry.

Which airlines fly inter-island? Hawaiian Airlines, Go! and Island Air. We regularly fly Hawaiian, I have not tried Go! or Island Air.
