Tattoos

Tattoos are very popular in Hawaii. The majority of locals are tattooed. Our third day living here, we saw a man at Big Beach in Makena with half his face tattooed. It was very striking - and I couldn't help but think of the pain he must have endured to have it done. Yes, I'm a coward when it comes to tattoos.

I have found an interesting article by PBS - called Skin Stories - the Art and Culture of Polynesian Tattoo.

Will I be getting a tattoo? I have no immediate plans for one. There is, of course, the less permanent and less painful alternative - henna body art. There's a shop on South Kihei Road (underneath Cafe O Lei) between Kamaole I and II beaches where you can get your henna 'tattoo'.
