Car rentals on Maui

I sometimes get asked, 'do I really need a car on Maui'? Technically you could get away without a car, taking a taxi to your condo, catching a bus to the store, walking to the beach.... However, I definitely would rent a car - there is so much to see!

We have all the big names in car rentals here - Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, Budget, National to name a few - plus a few local outfits. I am not going to recommend one over the other - google 'car rentals Kahului (OGG)' (that is the airport you will fly into) and see what you find. My advice is to check for online reviews and read the fine print. There are at least 4 companies that will allow the spouse to drive free (which can add up to a huge savings if you want it). Look for coupons, check your airmiles and by all means, shop around. Prices do fluctuate, sometimes wildly. Don't necessarily lock in a price. If you find a good price, book it without prepaying, and then by all means check back again at a later date to see if the price has dropped (don't forget to cancel the old booking if you find a better deal!).

Convertibles and Jeeps are popular rental cars - you will see many a sun-burned tourist driving along with the top down (sunscreen anyone?).

convertible anyone?

A word of advice - in busy season (mid-December to mid-April) car rental companies can run out of vehicles. That's right! It is a small island, after all. Please reserve a car before you arrive!

Drive safe and have a wonderful vacation!
